Heisman Trophy winner Rashaan Salaam was found dead Monday night in a Boulder park less than two miles from Folsom Field, where he carved his name into the University of Colorado record books as one of the greatest players in the program’s history. The Boulder County coroner’s office was still investigating the cause of the death of the 42-year-old Salaam, who won the Heisman in 1994. ”They said they found a note and would share that with us when we get there,” Salaam’s mother said.

Former New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez is set to appear in court in Boston in connection with the shooting deaths of two men in 2012. Hernandez and his lawyers are expected to attend a status conference Wednesday for his upcoming trial in Suffolk Superior Court. Hernandez is currently serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for the 2013 murder of semi-professional football player Odin Lloyd.

New York Jets coach Todd Bowles was toeing the fine line between trying to win games and preparing for the future. The Jets were mathematically eliminated from the postseason picture on Monday night, and in epic fashion while getting blown out 41-10 by the Indianapolis Colts . Until late Monday night, the coach had justified starting Fitzpatrick the past few games by saying he thought the veteran gave New York the best chance to win.

After failing to be targeted once against the Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants receiver Victor Cruz had a talk with rookie coach Ben McAdoo. What was interesting on Tuesday was Cruz said that it was McAdoo who sought him out as the Giants (8-4) returned to work and started looking forward to playing Dallas (11-1) on Sunday night at MetLife Stadium. Cruz said the conversation was an honest exchange between the coach and the 30-year-old veteran who is playing again this season after missing all but six games the past two years with knee and calf injuries.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Colts linebacker D’Qwell Jackson has been suspended for four games for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.

Bucs promote WR Huff, place WR Shorts on injured reserve (Yahoo Sports)

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers bolstered their injury-depleted receiving group, promoting Josh Huff from the practice squad to the active roster and placing Cecil Shorts III on injured reserve Tuesday. Huff, 25, is getting a second chance in the NFL after being released by the Philadelphia Eagles in the aftermath of the third-year pro’s arrest on gun and drug charges last month. The receiver was charged Nov. 1 with possession of a 9 mm handgun without a permit and having a small amount of marijuana after he was pulled over for speeding on the New Jersey side of the Walt Whitman Bridge.
