When Darrius Heyward-Bey heard about Martavis Bryant’s one-year suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, the elder statesmen among the Pittsburgh Steelers wide receivers sent his talented but erratic teammate a note. ”I told him we have his back,” Heyward-Bey said. The Steelers will have to navigate through 2016 first, and do it without the player most capable of providing the big-play yin to All-Pro Antonio Brown’s relentless yang.

Brandon Browner back with Seahawks but in a different role (Yahoo Sports)

”His attitude is terrific about it,” coach Pete Carroll said. The position switch is more in line with what Browner played during his one season in New England, where he won a Super Bowl title by helping ruin Seattle’s chances at back-to-back championships. Browner was an integral part of the decisive play during which Russell Wilson was intercepted by Malcolm Butler in the end zone.

The Baltimore Ravens have forfeited one week of offseason practices for violating the labor agreement on such workouts. The NFL also fined coach John Harbaugh $137,000 Thursday, while the team was fined $343,000 under current collective bargaining agreement guidelines. When the Ravens had rookies and first-year players don pads at a minicamp, it was a violation of the CBA rules.

Saints’ Anthony embracing linebacker shuffle, Laurinaitis (Yahoo Sports)

New Orleans Saints linebacker Stephone Anthony (50) goes through drills during NFL football practice in Metairie, La., Thursday, May 26, 2016. New Orleans plans to have free-agent acquisition James Laurinaitis take over that spot and the defensive play-calling and alignment responsibilities that go with it. (AP Photo/Gerald Herbert)

Saints linebacker Stephone Anthony isn’t so much concerned about the job he’s lost as the one he’s gained. Whatever helps the team,” Anthony said as he recounted an offseason phone call in which linebackers coach Joe Vitt informed him that he’d be moved out of his starting middle linebacker spot to make way for free-agent acquisition James Laurinaitis. The middle linebacker has arguably the most responsibility in an NFL defense.

Matthew Stafford dropped back and sailed a spiral through the air, over his intended target and onto the ground. The Detroit Lions gave their first glimpse of what life is like on the field without Calvin Johnson on Thursday, when the media had access to an offseason training activity for the first time this year. ”You can’t be fooled by what you see out here in shorts,” Detroit coach Jim Caldwell said.

Goodell reaffirms NFL’s concussion research role (Yahoo Sports)

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell reaffirmed the league’s commitment to concussion research in a letter Thursday to the 32 team owners. Goodell told the owners the league never considered not honoring a $30 million commitment to the NIH ”in its entirety.” He also stressed that the league will provide substantial additional funding for projects relating to safety equipment, treatment of athletes who have experienced concussions, and a study relating to the incidence and prevalence of long-term health consequences. ”We look forward to a productive and ongoing partnership with the NIH and others to advance our shared priorities, and to committing additional funding to medical research and engineering advances to enhance the safety of athletes at all levels,” Goodell wrote.

Ryan Tannehill threw a pass Thursday and then fell to the turf face down, which happened a lot last season. Instead, Tannehill did push-ups as punishment for his errant throw at a net during passing drills in a Miami Dolphins OTA. Executive vice president of football operations Mike Tannenbaum decided Tannehill needed more help, and hired as coach Adam Gase, who enjoyed success as an assistant working with Peyton Manning, Tim Tebow and Jay Cutler.

Should the Bills “tank” like the Sabres if they can’t get a franchise QB?

When the Pegula’s bought the Sabres back in 2011, they thought the Sabres would be able to win the Stanley Cup within three years, but that didn’t come to fruition as they realized they had did not have the right roster and management to win the cup, so they gutted the team, and purposely tanked for two years in order to get two great players in the draft which would change their franchise…

Inconsistent Bills Need To Build Some Consistency

One thing consistent about the Bills this season is that they have been inconsistent since the start of the season. The Bills have not been able to win two consecutive games in a row so far. Whether it’s been penalties that have hurt the Bills chances, the amount of players that have been injured, or the inconsistent play from a lot of the players, the Bills so far have not met the lofty…

What the hell did we see this past Saturday night?

The third preseason game of the year is usually a good indicator of how good or bad a team will do in the regular season. For years, die-hard Bills fans had the mantra “It’s only preseason…it’s only preseason,” while others shook their heads in disgust saying “oh great, here we go again, another crappy season!” Over the past fifteen years, the Bills were usually eliminated from the playoffs…

Are the Bills in QB “hell” ?

Bills GM Doug Whaley said the Bills are in “QB Purgatory”. Unfortunately as the season pans out, there may be a possibility that they could be someplace else, someplace much worse.
Entering into the third preseason game Coach Rex Ryan called the QB race even, that surprisingly all three have played at a high level.
While some teams may consider this a nice problem to have, the flip side says…

Bills QB competition down to two?

It seems like one of the three Bills QB’s is falling out of the QB competition. Third year QB, EJ Manuel, for a second week in a row has not seen any reps with the starting unit. The last time Manuel had reps with the one’s was in the Bills Blue and White scrimmage. Since then, veteran QB Matt Cassel took a majority of the reps with the one’s as he was named the starter for the first preseason…

Will the real Bills QB please stand up?!

This offseason, the Bills brought in free agent QB Tyrod Taylor and traded with the Minnesota Vikings for Matt Cassel to compete with E.J. Manuel for the starting Bills QB position. So far, nobody has separated themselves from each other as each QB has struggled with consistency. In Saturday’s scrimmage, Manuel looked the best out of the three QB’s followed by Taylor and Cassel. In today’s…

Is the “Flutie Curse” over with?

In January 2000, then Buffalo Bills owner, Ralph Wilson, made the call to then Bills HC Wade Phillips to have Rob Johnson become the starting QB for the Bills in the playoffs after he saw Johnson play well in a meaningless game 16 for the Bills. Former starting Bills QB, Doug Flutie was told by Phillips that he was only being benched for game 16 so he was rested for the playoffs, only to have the…
